The simplest explanation for stars shining with different colours.

The sun and stars are balls of gas made incandescent by energy from nuclear reactions deep in their interiors. The overall color of a star is an indication of its surface temperature, just as the dull-red glow of a rod of metal in fire indicates relatively low temperature; orange, yellow and white progressively hotter temperature still.
